Ever do something that you were told was Impossible to do in the medium you attempted it? Or that the medium you were using was not a viable medium and serious artists never used them? And yet, you're using those mediums and you ARE accomplishing those impossible to do things, and getting BEAUTIFUL pictures out of 'unacceptable' mediums?

Then this is the group for putting those pictures! Tell us how you made them and with what, and why they were impossible or unviable! Tell us the stories of how they came about and have fun!

******

Rules- well, we're still working on that part, and setting this up since this is BRAND new and I've never run a group before (don't worry! I'm bringing in EXPERT Help!).

Currently the only rules are:
  • Be polite
  • Have fun
  • When submitting art here, you must make sure to include in the Artists Comments what made it 'impossible' or 'unviable'

I'm not really expecting this to ever be a BIG group, but more a small community of just really cool artists. to that end, I am not expecting to have to put limits up - but will do so if this community actually blows past my expectations!

******

Why?
Why did I suddenly get the inspiration to make this group?

In conversations multiple times with other artists, I have often brought up a series of events in my life during college where I have found that I was not alone in these sorts of events.  They're usually pretty fun stories, or great stories of overcoming prejudices and difficulties in mediums.

Unviable Art: Crayola Crayons
Probably about 3rd year of college, while taking a 3D Lifeforms class, I was running out of money to buy good art supplies and my good art supplies were running low. Trying to save them for actual PROJECTS, I decided one day to bring in my crayons to use on the Newsprint Paper for the still life we were doing in class.

My teacher about flipped. She argued that Crayons were not an acceptable art medium and she refused to allow me to use them in class. I, of course, being greatly motivated by my lack of money, argued the point. Finally, we came to an agreement. I could use the crayons on 'parole' - if by the half time break she didn't like the results, I would be forced to put the crayons away and use real artists tools.

At the half time break, I was passing out crayons. Truly a message of triumph, and I wish i still had those pieces I did so I could show them off.

Impossible Art #1: Windows Paint
Starsmore: Winter 1995 to 1996 by DragonPress

Freshman year of college, I somehow wound up back in my Dorm before official open time. They couldn't get rid of me, so I had to keep a low profile. No lights, no music, I had no phone or internet. I did, however, have a computer with Windows 3.1 and the basic Paint program. With that, and a logitech Trackball (ooooold style), I copied over a favorite comic panel from Marvel's Generation X.

When my roomie showed up the next day, I proudly showed it off. She was COMPLETELY unimpressed.
"Thats easy to do on photoshop, in fact, its not all that great...that program can do so much better."
I told her that I didn't have photoshop. That I didn't even think my computer could RUN photoshop, and that I had done it in Paint.

She insisted that it was quite impossible and actually made me do another picture on Paint right then and there before she believed me. At which point she became very amazed and impressed that I'd managed to get such a basic, horrible program to do THAT. To this day, she still can't believe I did it....

Impossible Art #2: There is no Under painting
Purple Dragon - Color Pencil by DragonPress
Possibly not quite so amazing/impossible, was a Color Pencil piece I also did in Freshman year. Using Hot Press Illustration Board and a combination of Crayola, Design and Prismacolor pencils, i put together a purple dragon.

I never knew before that day that i could actually transfer color pencil to myself, but by the time i was done, my arms were covered in a deep purple stain. It was an official class project and I brought it in when it was due.

The teacher quite liked it and complimented me on an excellent use of an under painting. To which I literally panicked and asked, "Was it supposed to have one?" Thankfully, the answer to that was no, but she was unwilling to believe that there WAS no under painting till my roomie (and a few other friends) could confirm that I had, quite literally, done it all by hand using only Color Pencil

So you can see by these examples, a little of what we're looking for here, and what inspired the idea. If it was impossible, send it in! unviable/unacceptable but still awesome work despite that? Send it in!
Did you do an entire piece in ballpoint pen and it looks STUNNING? send it in! We want to see it!
